Development and application of microtechnologies for the development of microsystems and the application of Microsystems, including cooperation between SME’s and research institutions.

VDI/VDE-IT GmbH is an organisation set up by two of the largest European professional associations for engineers (VDI - German Association of Engineers and VDE - German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies). The company’s primary objective is to promote R&D in the area of microsystem technologies, to assist governmental authorities in developing initiatives for accelerating technological development and to speed up product and process innovation in SME’s

VDI/VDE-IT is particularly experienced in managing R&D projects and programmes being in charge of design, implementation and management of technology support and R&D programmes, of which the biggest is "Framework Programme Microsystems",  on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

VDI/VDE-IT is a highly experienced program manager and is eager to share experience and funding practise with its fellow programme managers in the European Union.
VDI/VDE-IT is participating in MNT ERA-NET as the delegated programme manager of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

BMBF programme "IKT-2020 / Schwerpunkt Mikrosystemtechnik"

note: currently no ERA-NET projects funded through this programme

Microsystems / Microsystems Technologies
none

Phases of R&D being funded (basic research, pre-competitive, application, serial production, market entry), funding rates (app.)

The Microsystems funding is focussing on industrial cooperative projects on pre-competitive, application oriented developments as well as on hybrids of basic research, industrial research and application oriented developments. The average funding rate is about 45-55 %, depending on specific project details (kind of R&D, the kind of partners and the consortium- and cost structure).

Major restrictions (e.g. types of institutions eligible for funding; SMEs, public/private etc., openness to transnational consortia)

The German part of a transnational project should promise a noteworthy and sustainable commercial exploitation by at least one of the German partners. The inclusion of German SMEs is highly welcome. Partial projects in Germany with merely research oriented R&D tasks and/or consisting only of research institutes/universities usually cannot be founded.

The "Research for Tomorrow’s Production – Pro*morgen" programme managed by PTKA-PFT Karlsruhe is, beside Mikrosystemtechnik+, the second nationwide support programme from Germany. Designed as a production technology programme, about 15-20 % of the projects are micro- or nanotechnology related. The support of MN production technologies needs co-ordination with the basic and application development oriented support in order to enhance the completion of value chains for quick market access. PTKA-PFT together with VDI-VDE-IT has a broad experience in co-ordinating calls and the involvement in joint activities, and is an active member in the EUREKA factory umbrella, all of which are experiences that the MNT ERA-NET will benefit from. They are a key player in national support for MN technologies.

The programme owner level will be represented together with VDI/VDE-IT’s MST+ by one and the same person from the national German Ministry for Science and Education.

PROmorgen

Designed as a production technology programme, about 15-20% of the projects are micro- or nanotechnology related, like the national calls "Nano goes production (2006)", "Production of micro optical components and systems (2007)" or "Manufacturing of local functional surfaces for higher resource efficiency (2008)".

Participation in the transnational MNT ERANET call 2006, 2009 and 2011

Further information on conditions and restrictions are given in the national call. Detailed information (in German) is available on www.produktionsforschung.de
