Institute for the Promotion of Innovation by Science and Technology in Flanders (IWT)

IWT-Flanders, the Institute for the Promotion of Innovation by Science and Technology in Flanders, is a governmental agency established by the Flemish Government in 1991. IWT is both a programme owner (in close co-operation with the Flemish Minister of Innovation) and a programme manager (selection and follow-up of research and innovation projects).

In 2003 about 426 R&D projects (incl. EUREKA) were funded in the larger MNT area. Complementary to this bottom-up approach, specific ‘institutional’ funding through competence centres - e.g. IMEC (Interuniversity MicroElectronics Center), VIB (Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie), IBBT (Interdisciplinary Institute for Broad Band Technology), FMTC (Flanders’ Mechatronics Technology Center) - is provided for the realisation of strategic objectives in the field of micro- and nanotechnology.

IMEC is managing MNT funding activities insofar as it is providing technology roadmaps and technological expertise in the field of MN Technologies.

DGTRE (Wallonia)

For the Region of Wallonia, the Directorate General for Technologies, Research and Energy (DGTRE), belonging to the Ministry of the Walloon Region, is the legal administration in charge of funding applied research for new technologies and energy for industry, academia and research centres, as well as of related international scientific co-operation. It is therefore the key advisory body for the regional government authorities involving research and innovation policy.

The DGTRE identifies priority areas for research, allocates research funding from governmental budgets, sets up and takes operational responsibility for RTD programmes, conducts evaluations of submitted proposals and follow-up of selected projects. It also has a role in disseminating scientific content to the public. The overall available budget of the DGTRE for 2003 was €234 million for a total manpower of 150 people (73 male, 77 female).

The DGTRE is the legal regional authority for co-operation with and promotion towards the international research environment and particularly with the European Union (e.g. Eureka, COST, Framework programme, Structural funds, Interreg, ERA-Net, European research area).
