Slovenia
Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MHEST)
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport (MESS) was reorganised to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MHEST) at the end of 2004 and the new Slovenian Research Agency take over most of the funding activities.
Slovenia as a small country in transition tries to further intensify international cooperation in order to achieve critical mass in selected topics. A bottom up approach is mostly used in this process. In 1999, the first call for national "research programmes" (comprehensive research projects lasting for five years involving larger research teams, similar to IP in FP6) was launched by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. In the year 2004, the next five-year round of 14 "research programmes" in micro and nano technology related research started. The National research and development programme is scheduled to be finished till June 2005.
