B - Subject and conditions of support

Program/Call name Technology/application focus covered Opening/Cut-off dates
a) FinNano (Finnish Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Programme) / Tekes' FinNano Call 2007

Focus areas for next FinNano Call 2008 :

  1. Scalability of nanotechnology solutions and production methods (nano-manufacturing)
  2. Nano-structured materials and nano-dispersion materials
  3. Components and solutions for nano-electronics and nano-photonics
  4. Nano-diagnostic devices and sensors

The FinNano programme studies, exploits and commercialises nanoscale systems and phenomena occurring on a nanoscale. Nanotechnology is horizontal and enabling and is associated with a minimum of three things: scale, functionality and the controllability of nanostructure. The approach is genuinely multidisciplinary.

There is no set deadline to submit applications for enterprise projects.
FinNano programme has annual calls for research institutes and universities. The next call will be announced on 17. Dec. 2007 and closed on 28 Feb. 2008 (if two step: 28. May 2008).

Phases of R&D being funded (basic research, pre-competitive, application, serial production, market entry), funding rates (app.)

Eligible are networks and multidisciplinary projects from research institutes and universities as well as industry. Research projects are conducted in cooperation with companies.

Tekes offers companies grants, capital loans and industrial loans. Differing funding measures can be combined in a single project. Funding is given within the following parameters:

  • Industrial R&D grants run from 15 to 65 percent of the eligible costs.
  • Capital R&D loans run from 35 to 60 percent of the eligible costs.
  • Industrial R&D loans run from 45 to 70 percent of the eligible costs.

Regular practice is that Tekes grants universities and research centres. Research (institution) grants can range from up to 100 percent of eligible costs. Grants are directed to the research work done at research institutes and universities.

Major restrictions (e.g. types of institutions eligible for funding; SMEs, public/private etc., openness to transnational consortia)

No restrictions.
